Exact Horsepower to Watt Calculation

Also know as: Where does 37284993579113511/50000000000000 come from?

1 hp = 33000 ft-lbf/min by definition

1 min = 60 s

1 foot = 3048/10000 (0.3048) meter

1 lb = 45359237/100000000 (0.45359237) kg

1 g = 196133/20000 (9.80665) m/s²

therefore:

1 hp = wolfram-alpha-exact-horsepower-to-watts-calculation =

wolfram-alpha-exact-horsepower-to-watts-fraction watt

Exact results

1 hp = 37284993579113511/50000000000000 watt exactly (irreducible fraction) or

1 hp = 745.69987158227022 watt exactly (decimal)

Floating Point Math – Your language isn’t broken, it’s doing floating point math. Computers can only natively store integers, so they need some way of representing decimal numbers. This representation comes with some degree of inaccuracy. That’s why, more often than not, .1 + .2 != .3.

Link to some examples of sending .1 + .2 to standard output in a variety of languages.

Google self-driving car pulled over for ‘driving too slowly’ in Mountain View – The Google car was pulled over for doing 25 (it’s top speed) in a 35 MPH zone.  By the vehicle’s classification as a “neighborhood electric vehicle”, it was perfectly legal for it to be doing so.

How to figure out the location where a form posts

If you are trying to figure out where a form posts (for instance to see whether or not it submits information securely) and the post location isn’t readily view-able in the page source, here is how to do it:

Using Firefox, (download if necessary) open Firebug.

Download Firefox

Download Firebug

Hit Ctrl+Shift+C to open the console.

Switch to the Net tab and submit the form.  (The console window needs to be open before you hit submit.)

In the list window you should see a POST request with the endpoint and the complete information about the request including Headers, Post, Response, JSON, Cache, and Cookies.

You can copy the endpoint location by right clicking and selecting Copy Location.
